A Consumer-Led Revolution in Redefining Natural Flavors

With today’s consumers questioning “what is natural flavor?” it’s critical for beverage companies to find an authentic and new narrative that can provide consumer-friendly communications. In 2014, Blue Pacific Flavors saw the convergence of consumer interest and demand for transparency and non-GMO ingredients with confusion around the definition of natural food labeling. The company recognized this new global paradigm shift in consumer interest in authenticity and clean-label foods and beverages as an opportunity to further evolve its platform for natural fruit flavors.

In the U.S., there is only one definition of natural relevant to food – the definition of natural flavor in the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations at 21 CFR 101.22(a)(3). There is no regulatory definition of natural food in the U.S. but FDA policy is that “natural food” is food to which “nothing artificial or synthetic has been included in or has been added to.”

The FDA has a much broader view of what can be labeled as natural flavor when compared to EU standards. Much of the U.S. flavor landscape utilizes natural flavor aroma chemicals via fermentation to create and characterize natural fruit flavors, while in the citrus industry citrus oils and by-products are used to create natural citrus flavors. The discrepancies in standards between U.S. and EU regulations leave multinational food and beverage companies at a disadvantage in formulating and marketing globally accepted naturally flavored products.

Meeting Global Customer and Consumer
Needs in Redefining Natural Flavor

Blue Pacific steps in to create a product range that meets global requirements for natural flavor designation and clearly differentiates from what has traditionally been available as natural flavors in the U.S.

Many U.S. natural flavors are derived from natural aroma compounds via fermentation. When added to make a finished flavor, they typically contain high levels of flavor solvents like propylene glycol or alcohol. Blue Pacific believes that by utilizing natural fruit extractives with natural organic solvents, it will provide a transparent understanding of what a natural flavor is, meeting the growing demand of consumers for food with clean labels.

Blue Pacific's new Farm Stand Natural Flavors challenge traditional U.S. natural flavors by creating true-to-fruit flavors from real, whole fruit extractives, organic solvents and natural aroma compounds. Our fresh fruit extractives contain unique compounds that can characterize the real fruit taste unlike diluted, non-characterizing juices or essences used in conjunction with natural aroma compounds and traditional chemical solvents. This provides an authentic and simple approach to building trust with consumers on what natural fruit flavors mean to them rather than how it is defined by FDA regulations.

Through strategic partnerships with fruit growers and processors, Blue Pacific has secured a unique fruit raw material supply chain, allowing us to create whole fruit extractives as one of our primary flavor ingredients.
